As hurricane Irene forces her way up the east coast, car owners may be wondering how to protect their vehicles from the predicted 70 mph winds.

If possible, car owners are advised to garage their vehicles. Though if there is an electric garage opener and owners lose power, drivers may not be able to get to their ride. It may be wise to dig up the owners manual to find out how to override the system manually before the hurricane hits.
Although a garage is the best option, for those who don’t have one, the best thing to do is to move any objects that could hit the car away from it. Birdbaths, birdhouses, lawn ornaments, flower pots, grills and even garbage cans can do severe harm to a vehicle if strong winds blow these items on it. Also, make sure to park a vehicle far away from any trees that are leaning or flimsy and could be torn up by the gusts.
If drivers need to get out for some reason, AAA suggests making an emergency kit beforehand to keep in the car in case of an injury or other problems that could arise during a storm.
