TotalCarScore.com, an automotive evaluation website, recently released its list of the top fuel efficient cars in 2012, with the Toyota Prius proving once again to be a dependable vehicle, ranking at the top of the list.

With consumers looking for more fuel efficient vehicles, considering gas prices are expected to creep up to $5 a gallon during the spring and summer months, TotalCarScore's list of the most fuel efficient vehicles might come in handy when shopping for a new car.

"In this market, car buyers are more concerned than ever about fuel economy, but they also want a vehicle that is reliable and offers strong resale value," said Karl Brauer, editor-in-chief of Total Car Score. "Our list includes only those 2012 vehicles that managed segment-leading MPG figures and earned a 'Total Car Score' above the segment average."

The Ford Fiesta and Chevrolet Sonic ranked at the top of the list for economy cars, with both able to achieve 33 miles per gallon.

The Toyota Prius C five-door hatchback also recently outsold the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf in its first three days on the market.
