Although in-wheel motors are nothing new, they could become more commonplace, as auto makers look for new ways to cut emissions and improve fuel economy.

According to Automotive News, the Vauxhall Vivaro van is equipped with in-wheel electric motors in both rear wheels that have been developed by Protean Electric. The motors can be used as the sole power source for the vehicle in order to free up room inside the unit and can also be used in conjunction with an internal combustion engine.

"If you take the motor out of the traditional location in the vehicle architecture and put it out in the wheels, you get that space that the engine used to occupy," Mark West, chairman of the Transportation Design Department at the College for Creative Studies, told the news source. "So it opens up opportunities to rearrange the package of the vehicle."

Elsewhere in auto industry news, Fiat is following in Ford's footsteps by developing its own van to sell as a Ram. According to USA Today, the success of Ford's Transit Connect truck-car has led to Fiat importing the Doblo into the United States.
